Оказывается, процентные квоты для евреев существуют и в цитадели демократии. Например, абитуриент при поступлении в университеты лиги плюща обязан указывать девичью фамилию матери и вроде бы есть статистика, подтверждающая дискриминационный характер этой практики. Эта практика вполне процветала и в те времена, когда американские политики были крайне озабочены тем, что евреев не берут на мехмат. Потрясающая гибкость мышления! (Если не называть вещи своими именами: лицемерие и цинизм.)
По этому поводу вспомнилась история, рассказанная моим братом. Он в студенческие времена подрабатывал в своем институте, администрируя базу данных приемной комиссии. Компьютеры тогда были еще маленькие, память экономили на всяких мелочах. В частности, поле "национальность" задавалось одним битом.

Well, this is a superficial posting - not typical of Mike. Indeed, there was blatant anti-Jewish discrimination in the Ivy League, but it all ended more than 50 years ago. This is a fairly complex subject, and those interested should invest time and effort (if they deem it worthy). Basically, the discrimination started about 100 years ago, when children of the first wave of Russian-Jewish immigrants started flooding the elite colleges. They took advantage of their success at taking standardized tests that became important criteria for admission in the early 20th century (more than 50% of NYU students were Jewish, while Columbia was exceeding 30%). The primary advocate of anti-Jewish measures was the then president of Harvard Lowell (who replaced a very liberal one - Eliot). So, Harvard started talking about taking "character" into account in the admission process - using interviews, essays, etc. It was pretty much in the open that it was anti-Jewish. I have to emphasize that Mike's comment about similarities with what was happening during the Soviet times is totally beyond the pale: at the worst time for the Jews in the 1930-ties, Harvard was still admitting more than 10% Jews on the average. The Ivy colleges with the lowest percentage of Jews were Princeton and Dartmouth (about 4% each) - compare that with 1% that was the target percentage at MGU, Phystech, etc. Even the tsarist quota was better - 3%! All the negative discrimination in the Ivy league ended by the early 1960-ties. What is happening now is positive discrimination (affirmative action). Note that the greatest beneficiaries of positive discrimination in the Ivy League admissions are actually not the racial minorities, but rather football players (close to 300 old SAT points benefit, statistically speaking)! And when positive discrimination is outlawed (as is the case in the state schools in CA), those benefiting the most nowadays are actually not the Jews, but rather the Chinese students who now exceed 50% of the student population at Berkeley and UCLA!
